Focus on Science
We use the Focus on Science curriculum with some of our third graders, fourth graders and fifth graders. This year we will be using set C. We will learn/read about different types of animals including air animals, water animals and land animals. We will also be discussing different types of simple tools such as: wheels and axles, pulleys, and ramps wedges and screws. In our weather unit, we will learn about hurricanes, tornadoes, and snowstorms. George Eastman, Henry Ford, and Thomas Edison are three inventors that we are going to research. We are going to do experiments along with hands on learning materials to learn about all of these fun concepts.

Early Science
We use the Early Science curriculum with our first graders, second graders and some third graders. This year we will be concentrate on Earth and Sky and The Life Cycle. In the Earth and Sky unit, we will talk about life on Earth, the sun and the moon, phases of the moon, the function of the sun, sunlight and the sun's energy. These concepts align with our science warm up topic Earth and Space. In the Life Cycle unit, we will learn about life and living, animal life cycles, plant life cycles, living things, animals, and decaying matter. This unit closely aligns with the science warm-up topic organisms.

Science Warm-up
Every week we focus on a science warm-up topic. The topics include Earth and Space, Organisms, Force and Motion, and Matter. During our Earth and Space units, some of the things that we talk about are day and night, Earth's resources, plants, weather, seasons, and the sun, moon and planets. During our Organisms units, some of the things we learn about are animal habitats, animal groups, life cycles, living/nonliving, and what living things need. During our Force and Motion units, some of the things that we discuss are magnetic, push/pull, simple machines, sink/float, hot/cold and gravity. During out Matter units, some of the topics we cover are solid/liquid/gas, changes in matter, and heating and cooling matter.

Science Experiments
Wednesday is usually our science experiment day. I love watching the kid's faces as we perform magic using science. They enjoy measuring out amounts, pouring, mixing and observing! Our science experiments are usually done along with our Science warm-up topic. Some of the topics we cover are organisms (living/nonliving, what living things need, life cycles, habitats, animal groups), force and motion (magnets, push/pull, simple machines, repel, sink/float, wind), matter (solid/liquid/gas, melting, freezing), and earth and space (rocks, day/night, soil, water cycle, plants, recycle).

Science Journals
We did science journals this past year. Thursday was journal day. Some of the subjects we covered with our journal were living/nonliving, magnetic/nonmagnetic, experiment reflection sheets, healthy vs. unhealthy foods, day/night, states of matter, and sinking and floating. The kids took such pride in their journals. They would often look back over their work to review the things we learned about. I would include past work during new lessons to help trigger prior knowledge of the concept.

Ginger
This is Ginger our pet guinea pig. I received a grant to get a pet for our classroom. I did research and a guinea pig was the best fit for our classroom. Guinea pigs are comfortable being handled and are relatively easy to take care of. She is teaching the kids about the difference between living and nonliving things. Living things need shelter, food and water. The kids measure out her food and feed her everyday. They also make sure she has clean water. She is teaching the concept of being gentle and using a gentle touch. We love Ginger and she is a great asset to our classroom.
